Unfortunately, living in Las Vegas might not be as wild and crazy as movies depict! I can assure you, my biggest daily challenge is NOT trying to figure out why there is a tiger in my bathroom.
Daily life changed radically for me four years ago this July - that will be the 3-year anniversary of my transplant from Georgia to Las Vegas. Before moving to Vegas? My world was full of weekend yard work, running my own business creating handmade jewelry, and working at the adorable and quaint Evolve boutique, located in the village near Atlanta's Emory University. My partner's job transfer led to a very quick (as in 3 weeks notice) move to Sin City. Talk about shock! Also shocking? How quickly 3 years has flown by! In homage to the approach of summer, here's a taste of what daily life in Las Vegas is like:
3 tips for surviving life in Las Vegas (or any hot climate) in style?
1. Hydrate : That means alot of water. I've read that you should drink one half of your body weight in ounces. This means that if you weigh 150 pounds, then 75 ounces of water a day is the right amount. In my opinion, the more, the better!
2. Wear loose-fitting clothing : It is possible to have great summer style, even when you don't feel like wearing anything except your bathing suit! Think unique sundresses, shorts outfits with flow-y tops, and of course - sandals! I've pinned a selection of my favorites for the season to our currently trending board on pinterest.
3. Moisturize : 114 degree heat with wind blowing like a hot hair dryer in your face - that's what life in the Sahara Desert is like. Sandal wearing is a must, but that exposes your heels. Shorts and sundresses leave knees and elbows more parched than normal. To survive Summer in style (and in an effort to not turn into a desert lizard) I use everything in the Skin Stick Bundle from Rinse Soap. The Pepfoot Stick - twice a day on my heels. Skin Stick? Anywhere else I'm feeling a bit dehydrated. Delicious all-natural lip balms? In my handbag, beside my bed, and on my bathroom counter! In general, I greatly prefer using hand-crafted bath and body products, I like their smell better and feel they do a better job moisturizing. The great thing about Rinse products? Most of them are portable and airline friendly. A must for summer travel!
Happy (almost) summer...and take it from a local: what happens in Vegas? Not as much craziness as you'd think!

In celebration of Earth Day 2012 (and to prepare a bit for wrapping Mother's Day presents) we tackled an eco-friendly project recently found on pinterest: vintage fabric bows. We love this inexpensive way to decorate gifts with unique style!
When we first stumbled across this unique gift wrap idea by blogger Carrie Stroud, it was instantly committed to memory as a diy to try. After all, everyone has fabric lying about the house that could be used for this extremely easy, fun and impressive project! The 5 simple steps for making these fabric gift wrap bows follow the photo below...

1. Using cardboard, cut out 4 rectangles as patterns. Each pattern piece should measure 3/4 inch wide. Cut lengths of 10 inches, 9 inches, 8 inches and 6 inches. 2. Using your cardboard patterns, trace (on the backside your fabric) the following: three 10-inch rectangles, three 9-inch rectangles, two 8-inch rectangles and one 6 inch rectangle. Cut each rectangle out with pinking shears. 3. Make each strip into a loop and staple each loop at the center. 4. In order of largest to smallest, stack your loops. You can put a small dab of blue in between each loop, or sew them all together with 2 loops of your needle in the center when you're finished stacking. Either method works fine! 5. Attach a vintage button to the center of your bow, or leave it plain. Bows can be attached to presents with either tape or hot glue.

When decorating with color, unique accessories like modern clocks from pilot design are all you need to pull your bold look together!

What better way to prove that than by the photograph above, snapped by blogger and Pilot Design customer Rhena Tantisunthorn. To quote Rhena on why she loves Pilot's style: "Pilot design clocks are both simple and unique. I love the clean, slightly retro-feel and the size. We have a pretty big one in our bright blue living room (pictured above) so it's dramatic. Plus, it was locally made, which is important to me. The design we have is called "splat" and I love that it has that little sense of humor about it! I'd like to think that my husband and i have a modern style in our home -- simple lines and functional pieces. We've tried to maintain a lot of the original woodwork and and have mostly natural materials our 1920s home. But honestly, we have a two year old right now and we don't have the budget (yet) for much more than a clock or a table here or there, so we'll call it "modern young family with toddler." By which I mean there are toys all over our house and more furniture from ikea than i'd care to admit!"
Thanks, Rhena! Your bright wall and fantastic Pilot Design timepiece inspired us to play around a bit with color and clocks:

A white ceramic vase with bright orange gerber daisies would really pop! Or switch it up a bit and add color with a brighter vessel, like a hand-blown glass vase full of seasonal blooms. Either vase would work with the unique picture frame (each piece features either a similar color or is made from a simliar material). The neutral wall color allows accessories to shine, even the more subdued Pilot Design honeycomb clock.

Pilot's honeycomb clock really lets your wall color shine through! Lime green, bright orange - even neutral colors provide excellent backgrounds and allow your timepiece to double as unique art.
There are so many choices when decorating while under the influence of color! You can paint your walls a bright color and keep your accessories neutral, like the bright green brick wall and white pilot clock above. Or, you can keep your walls and furniture more neutral - like the gray walls and white couch combo above. Let your (in this case) bright green accessories pop! No matter which way you choose to add color to your home's interior, adding unique home accessories like Pilot Design's modern clocks will really pull your look together.

New York and Paris are NOT the only places where models strut down runways each season!
Mother Nature was putting on some pretty bold displays of spring color and unique accessorizing during a hike I took in Red Rock Canyon this past weekend. Even in the middle of the dry desert, I observed a brilliant fashion show of greens, pinks, reds and oranges - proving Ms. Nature has an edgy glam style all her own. Betsey Johnson, eat your heart out!
